How to get there It takes approximately 2 hours to drive from the central business district (CBD) of Adelaide to Cape Jervis. You are required to check in at least 30 minutes prior to departure, so you therefore should allow 2.5 hours if you are driving from the Adelaide CBD.
Operating hours
Check-in requirements Please ensure you arrive at the ferry terminal 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time to allow enough time to check in. Regrettably, failure to arrive before this time will most likely be classified as no-show and result in forfeiting the booking and it cannot be refunded or transferred.

If you are not familiar with the area or travelling on a weekend or local public holidays / school holidays, please make sure you've checked your timetable or driving route beforehand, and allow extra travelling time for unexpected delays to ensure you do not miss your check in

On arrival at the Ferry Terminal Terminal please proceed to the check-in counter with your booking reference number or provide your surname. You will be presented with a boarding pass for each passenger travelling and one for the vehicle and driver.

Please park your vehicle in the vehicle loading lanes as directed. Only the drivers are to be in the vehicle during loading, passengers board via the ramp in front of the terminal building.

Other info ● Please advise your vehicle make / model (e.g. Toyota Corolla, Ford Falcon) in the "Special Requirement" field when check out.

● Due to safety considerations you must not stay in your vehicle during a ferry crossing. If you have a physical disability or serious illness that limits your ability to climb the stairs from the vehicle deck to the passenger deck and you need to remain in your vehicle during the ferry crossing, please inform The Service Provider at the time of booking or at check-in. The Service Provider will then make arrangements to assist you as best they can but please note that your request cannot be guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the Ship's Master on the day of travel.

● Please lock all your luggage inside the car taking only essential items to the passenger deck. For security reasons, there is no access to vehicle deck during the voyage.

● Items that cannot be brought to Kangaroo Island
Please do not bring these items to Kangaroo Island, they are prohibited and significant penalties will apply - honey products, bee handling equipment, potatoes, grape vine cuttings and soil, rabbits and foxes.

● Trip time is approximately 45 minutes. Please note that on some sailings, the ferry terminal may not be open. In these cases, the ferry crew will conduct the check-in for you.

● Complimentary Wi-Fi access is available on board ferries and in the ferry terminals.

● Guests can take dog or cat on the ferry at no charge. Passengers with pets are only allowed on the top deck of the vessel which has an indoor and outdoor area. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their animal's waste. Guide dogs, hearing dogs, assistance dogs and service dogs, including those in training, are permitted throughout the terminals and vessels and containment requirements do not apply.

● Ferries are wheel chair and disabled friendly.

The two modern, air-conditioned car and passenger ferries, Sealion 2000 and Spirit of Kangaroo Island take just 45 minutes to cross Backstairs Passage between Cape Jervis and Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. 

Both ferries are twin-hulled catamaran ferries complete with air-conditioned lounges, comfortable lounge or café style seating, a licensed café serving great cappuccinos and fresh snacks, outdoor viewing decks, wheelchair access, disabled toilets and baby change facilities.

The Cape Jervis Terminal has access friendly restrooms, souvenirs, comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi. 

 

Facilities are available at the Penneshaw Terminal

Penneshaw has access friendly restrooms, a lift, waiting lounge, free Wi-Fi and a Kangaroo Island produce and wine store.

 

Boarding

A boarding announcement will be made and guests may board the ferry via the passenger ramp or air-bridge. Vehicle drivers are required to drive their vehicle on board under the guidance of the ferry crew. The crew are there to assist if you require assistance with driving your car onto the ferry. Once your car is safely parked and handbrake on, the ferry crew will guide you to the closest exit door to the passenger deck areas. On arrival into port an announcement will be made regarding giving disembarkation details.
