Located in NSW and an easy 55 minutes drive from Newcastle, a 30 minutes drive from Newcastle Airport or 2.5 hours drive from Sydney.

Other info ● Children under 13 years of age will need to be accompanied and supervised by an Adult.
● Infants are 3 years and under and are free of charge with a full fee paying Adult.
● Alcohol - Is not permitted to be brought into the sanctuary by guests/visitors.
● Animals - No animals may be brought onto the Sanctuary with the exception of animals for disability assistance.
● Entry Inspection - It is a Condition of Entry that a search of a person and/or their possessions may be required at the time of entry into the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary.
● Food & Beverages – The Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary offers guests access to food and beverage facilities via the Fat Possum café. No substantial foods or beverages (drink bottles allowed) allowed inside the sanctuary.
● Photography - Guests must not reach over any enclosure fences, glass or walls or call out to get koalas attention when taking photographs. No flash photography allowed.
● Smoking - The Sanctuary is a Smoke Free environment. Smoking is only permissible in the car park areas.

2 Overview

Port Stephens Council in partnership with Port Stephens Koalas has created a Koala Sanctuary to ensure first-class care to sick, injured and orphaned koalas. The Koala Sanctuary offers visitors a unique opportunity to see koalas in their natural habitat. A visit to the Sanctuary also supports their long-term rehabilitation, preservation and conservation in the wild.

  • Get up close to koala in their natural habitat via the Newcastle Airport SKYwalk and viewing platform, an elevated treetop canopy boardwalk and observation platform.
  • Enjoy 'Kasey's Tale' the story of koala as visitors explore the 250 metre Sanctuary Story Walk filled with large scale sculptures, habitat and local environment information.
  • Pass by the Koala Hospital viewing window to maybe witness koalas being cared for by veterinary professionals and passionate volunteers.

A meandering 250 metre pathway offering visitors an immersive educational experience of the koala and its habitat

 

Koala Hospital 

Take a look through the hospital viewing window as veterinary staff carry out examinations (when underway) and administer treatment to koala inpatients. 

 

Important notes for a visit: A visit to the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary entails a round trip walk of about 1km in length. All pathways and elevated viewing platforms are easily accessible designed for all ages and abilities. It is recommended that you wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen for sun protection and drink plenty of water to remain hydrated.
