2 Overview

Rainforestation Nature Park is eco-friendly and hosts Army Duck Rainforest Tours (which includes the Tropical Fruit Orchard), Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience and Kuranda’s largest Koala & Wildlife Park. The amphitheatre’s natural setting provides a beautiful backdrop for the Pamagirri Corroboree; a traditional dance performance depicting aspects of indigenous culture including animals, food gathering and hunting. The rainforest serves as the theatre walls whilst sounds of wildlife provide accompaniment to the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo and clapsticks.

The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is the largest butterfly flight aviary and exhibit in the Southern Hemisphere. Located in the heart of Kuranda, only a short walk from Skyrail and the Kuranda Scenic Railway station, our sanctuary is home to over 1500 butterflies from a variety of species.

Rainforestation Nature Park (RFS)

Rainforestation Nature Park is located in Far North Queensland, amidst the Kuranda rainforest. This is an all-weather attraction, home to the Army Duck Rainforest tours on land and water, the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience and the iconic Australian animals in the Koala & Wildlife Park.

Highlights
  • Guided Wildlife Park Tour (30 mins)
  • Pamagirri Dreamtime Walk (30 mins)
  • Pamagirri Dance Show (30 mins)
  • Army Duck Tours (45 mins)

Army Duck Rainforest Tours

Experience the tropical rainforest from a totally unique perspective aboard an amphibious World War II Army Duck or DUKW (colloquially known as Duck).

Rainforestation has twelve of these historical vehicles which hold up to 30 passengers and uses a 6 wheel drive, propeller and rudder. During this 45 minute rainforest tour, your knowledgeable Duck Captain will identify and explain fascinating plants and wildlife as you pass by before splashing into the lake for a cruise with more wildlife to be seen.

During your tour, you'll visit the tropical fruit orchard which features over 60 different species of exotic tropical fruit trees and you'll learn about fruits of the region and the world.

Koala & Wildlife Park

The Koala and Wildlife Park allows visitors to experience another facet of Australia.

Wander at your leisure or join a guided group with experienced Wildlife Keepers. A series of elevated boardwalks provide close-up uninterrupted views of various Australian animals and reptiles.

Handfeed the free roaming kangaroos and wallabies in the landscaped gardens, observe the endangered cassowary, see wombats and lace monitors, and view local snakes and other reptiles.

The star attraction of the Wildlife Park is "Jack the Ripper", a 5 metre saltwater crocodile weighing at 650kgs with a reputation of killing 12 of his girlfriends in times gone by. Jack is kept in his own enclosure with an elevated platform perfect for your safe and close-up viewing.

On the other side of Jack is the fresh water enclosure where a bask of juvenile crocodiles, turtles and lizards sun themselves and casually swim around.

Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience

Australia's Indigenous culture is one of the oldest surviving cultures in the world and Rainforestation Nature Park recognises the importance of preserving and sharing this unique culture.

Local indigenous Pamagirri guides welcome you to join them on a journey to discover the Dreamtime and learn about the fascinating customs and ancient traditions that are kept alive in the rainforest of Kuranda, in Tropical North Queensland.

The Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience takes approximately 1 hour which includes both the Pamagirri Aboriginal Dance Show held in the Rainforest Amphitheatre and the Dreamtime Walk conducted either before or after the show.

Dreamtime Walk

This half-hour guided tour along an all-weather walk-way modelled on the Rainbow Serpent gives further insight into aboriginal traditions and beliefs and how several ancient implements were used.

Enter the Pamagirri Cultural Centre at Rainforestation and experience Tropical North Queensland through the eyes of the people who have been its custodians for tens of thousands of years.

Try your hand at boomerang throwing and after a demonstration and a few lessons, you'll be ready to test your skills. The area is specially netted for your safety, as boomerangs do come back!

When you observe spear-throwing, you'll be amazed at the distance the Pamagirri guides can throw spears using a Woomera.  One of the Guides, Jauwa, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records with a distance of 147.75 metres which equates to one and a half football fields!

Discover how the spear was used for hunting (imagine having to catch your own dinner for every meal!) and to uphold traditional law in tribal communities. Thankfully, punishments endured in the past bare no resemblance to those used today.

Indigenous Australians are born entertainers as music and dance are an integral part of this culture and used to pass on customs and traditions.  In the midst of traditional aboriginal dwellings, your guide will explain how didgeridoos are made and used in ceremonies, and then reveal the techniques used to play this haunting ancient instrument by imitating the noises of Australian animals. Listen carefully for sounds imitating Kangaroos or the Kookaburra. It's easier said than done and you'll have a chance to try this yourself after the lesson.

Australian Butterfly Sanctuary (ABS)

Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is the largest butterfly flight aviary and exhibit in Australia - an all-weather experience in the heart of Kuranda. Home to over 2,000 magnificent tropical butterflies, you will be enchanted by the aerial dynamics of these elusive wonders of nature as you wander through the aviary's rainforest gardens.

All butterflies are local rainforest species, including the electric blue Ulysses and the majestic green and yellow Cairns Birdwing butterflies.

Guided aviary tours detailing a butterfly's life cycle and behaviour are available at no extra cost throughout the day. Be sure to wear something bright (recommend red, white or hot pink) and let these beautiful and colourful creatures flutter all over you as you wander through!

After walking through the aviary, the guide will take you to the breeding laboratory, which houses up to 4,000 caterpillars. This interesting and educational experience provides an opportunity to view at first hand the breeding laboratory through special viewing windows, where you will see the caterpillars in their varying stages of development.
